Irish Annies Review: Civic Theatre, Dublin
3rd April 2024
Robbie Kane, Dublin Live 10/10
Irish Annies a new musical play written by the very talented half Irish half Liverpoodlian Asa Murphy, is a stellar show celebrating the best in Irish tradition and songs sung the way it was done back in the day.
The story set in a pub starts with the lovable landlady Annie, played by Catherine Rice who is warm witty and engaging from the get-go, receives bad news that her popular Irish publican house could be taken off her by a vicious moneylender called Moira played by the very sassy and cunning Maria Lovelady.
Staff, customers and her amazing 5 piece house band which include musicians playing the mandolin guitar, flute Irish pipes, drums and bass rally around try to amend it.
You then hear honest and open tales of their past lives accompanied by some of the most memorable Irish ballads like 'The Black Velvet' Band, 'When Irish Eyes are Smiling', 'Ill Tell Me Ma' alongside newly written ones by the enigmatic Asa Murphy who also stars in this remarkable stage show as Seamus Murphy
An array of other characters you will encounter is Porky the Postman/ Joe who is a hidden gem in this production played by Michael Alan Bailey, Noel Singen-Smithe - Richard Barry, who sings one of the most beautiful renditions of 'Danny Boy' you will ever hear and May who portrayed again by the multi talented Maria Lovelady
The icing on the cake though for Irish audiences is the appearance on stage by a much loved Royle Family member, Ricky Tomlinson (Jim Royle in the multi award winning TV Show)
Ricky brings his own personality into the script as well as his characteristic Dad persona which is boldly welcomed and embraced throughout.
If you're blessed to have bought a ticket for the remaining shows which are nearly sold out you will be guaranteed the best escape from the outside world you will have in ages, that is until the next time it comes back to Dublin in the not too distant future.
